Greek Silver Drachma Coin - Herakles - 1 pc
This silver Drachma coin is 1/2 inch in diameter and was struck in the 336-323 BC timeframe.

Alexander the Great’s mints produced an immense issue of silver coinage. As this great conqueror’s Macedonians forces advanced eastward into Asia, quanities of coin money was required to pay and feed his army as well as to maintain his new empire. This drachm coin is a representative example struck with the head of Herakles clad in a lion’s skin. On the coin’s reverse side is an image of Zeus, enthroned, with outstretched hand holding an eagle. His left hand holds a scepter.
Similar images are found on Alexander’s other silver denominations. Note that is not uncommon to see the drachm mounted in a jewelry setting.
