This silver Tetradrachm coin is 1 1/4 inch in diameter and was struck in Amphipolis, Macedonia in the 158-148 BC timeframe.

This large silver coin was struck at Amphipolis, Macedonia shortly after the Romans divided Macedonia into four provinces. This tetradrachm is an artistic design of a Macedonian shield with the bust of the Goddess Artemis in profile at center. Its reverse shows Greek legends above and below a club all surrounded by an oak wreath. Artemis was the deity of the chase and a huntress with a bow and arrow. Her depiction is is not uncommon on bronze and silver coinage.
