Writer-filmmaker Stelyani Sandris was born Stella Changas in Detroit on July 4, 1939. The sixth child of immigrant parents from Crete, she was only two years old when her father died. A precocious, uncannily perceptive and self-aware child, Stella was marked deeply by the loss of her father and the experiences of her impoverished childhood. Throughout her life, she wrote about those experiences and retold some of the stories her mother and much older sisters had recounted about her family. But it was a painful struggle.
Greek Soul: Memories Of A Detroit Childhood is a compilation of the stories and essays she completed. Such stories as “True Greek,” “Mikrokosmos,” and “Greek Soup” resonate with the deep pride and love she had for her family and Greek heritage. Sadly, she was unable to finish the saga. Stelyani Sandris died of a brain tumor in November 2000.
